Rain

ASH (Mark R. Watson)
Oil on Canvas

In "Rain," Watson uses his unique "Wolfman" style, which emphasizes physical energy in oil painting rather than fine detail. This piece shows a single Indigenous figure wearing a wolf headdress, coming out of a vertical wash of soft greys and earthy colors.

The thick, rhythmic application of paint creates a feeling of rainfall that reflects both the environment and the inner self. The title "Rain" hints at the weather suggested by the streaked background, as well as a symbolic cleansing. The subject's calm expression and the thick, textured paint on his torso show a strength against the elements. This suggests a deep connection between the warrior, his animal spirit, and the natural world.

Watson's technique includes using a palette knife and spontaneous brushwork to shape the figure from the darkness. The act of painting becomes as much a struggle as the survival shown in the artwork.
