Maggot

Ash (Mark R. Watson)

Oil on Canvas

In "Maggot," Ash (Mark R. Watson) presents a vivid, creature-based representation of decay and rebirth. The central figure, a twisted, goblin-like being, crouches in a defensive yet expectant stance. Its skin is a mixed pattern of ochre, crimson, and mossy green, resembling the colors of decay.

Watson’s technique features thick paint and drips, which create a textured surface that feels alive and moist, as if the figure is rising from the very ground it occupies. The long, claw-like fingers and piercing, amber eyes hint at a predator’s instinct, but the title "Maggot" suggests a deeper meaning. Rather than simply being a monster, the figure represents the important, though unsettling, role of scavengers in nature's cycle.

Set against a background of bare trees and distant, shadowy palms, the piece examines the tension between the grotesque and the vital. It challenges the viewer to recognize the beauty within the breakdown of life.
