Sprocket

ASH (Mark R. Watson)
Oil on Canvas

Description
In Sprocket, Watson presents a powerful, textured portrait of a menacing, goblin-like figure. It rises from a chaotic background of murky greens and deep indigos. The figure features bright, orange-rimmed eyes and a jagged row of protruding, yellowish teeth. The artist uses thick strokes of paint, a technique called impasto, to give the creature a tactile, almost sculptural quality.

The title "Sprocket" hints at a mechanical or industrial source, but the visual representation feels highly organic and primal. This contrast creates a sense of "techno-biological" horror, where the mechanical name conflicts with the raw, monstrous form. The narrow, vertical composition traps the viewer in an intimate, uncomfortable encounter with the subject, highlighting its predatory and unsettling nature.

About the Artist

Mark R. Watson, who goes by the name ASH, is known for his dark, expressive style that explores themes of the subconscious and the grotesque. His work often features:

- Heavy Texture: Using palette knives and thick layers of oil paint to create "3D" effects on a 2D surface.

- Atmospheric Color Palettes: A preference for murky tones—olives, teals, and blacks—interrupted by sharp, high-contrast highlights.

- Exploration of the Monstrous: His subjects often exist at the edge of myth, machine, and nightmare.
