Granny Smith

Maude Jane Warren-Smith (1899–2000)
Artist: ASH (Mark R. Watson)
Relationship: Great-grandson of the subject

This intimate portrait captures the enduring spirit of Maude Jane Warren-Smith, known to her family and community as "Granny Smith." She was born in Arkansas at the turn of the 20th century and lived an extraordinary 100 years, serving as a crucial link to her ancestral heritage and the land.

As a Chickamauga descendant, Maude Jane upheld the traditions of her family, which trace back to the defiant group of Cherokees led by Dragging Canoe in the late 18th century. In her community, she was respected as a healer, using traditional methods that blended spiritual rituals with deep knowledge of medicinal plants. This was a legacy of the "sacred formulas" handed down through generations of Cherokee healers.

Her great-grandson, Mark R. Watson (ASH), painted this work as part of a larger exploration of ancestral memory and cultural identity. The textured, bold brushwork reflects the resilience and "Trinity" of her life: her heritage, her healing gift, and her role as a matriarch.
