ASH (Mark R. Watson)
Oil on canvas

In "Carlos," the artist ASH (Mark R. Watson) explores mortality and myth in a raw, textured way. The central figure, a muscular, skeletal being, is created with bold, thick brushstrokes that give the skin a rough, stone-like appearance. This hands-on approach highlights the physical struggle and "presence" often found in Watson's work, where oil paint is used for sculpting rather than just coloring.

The composition contrasts darkness with brightness:

- Symbolism: The figure is decorated with traditional elements that remind viewers of Día de los Muertos (Day of the Dead) imagery, featuring a heavy garland of marigolds (cempasúchil) and a skull-topped headdress.
- Contrast: Delicate orange flowers surround the threatening skeletal figure, creating tension between the beauty of nature and the certainty of death.
- Energy: The figure’s dynamic, lunging stance and bony hands reaching out to the viewer create an immediate sense of confrontation. This invites reflection on the "battle" of existence and the legacies we leave behind.

You can see more of this series in the artist's official gallery at Spunone Productions.
