Yona

Artist: ASH (Mark R. Watson)

Medium: Oil on Canvas
Year: c. 2024

Artist Statement
In the Tsalagi language, Yona translates to "Bear." This portrait is more than a study of wildlife; it explores the bear as a sovereign spirit and a guardian of nature. Mark R. Watson (ASH) uses a signature impasto technique, where thick, rhythmic applications of oil paint create a tactile sense of depth.

The palette includes earthy ochres, deep ambers, and subtle blues, all combined in a mosaic of short, directional strokes. These marks do not just outline the animal’s form; they suggest a vibrational energy—the "medicine" of the bear. By focusing on a direct, front-facing gaze, Watson invites a moment of recognition between the viewer and the subject, closing the gap between human and the raw, ancient wisdom of the wild.
