Messengers

Artist: ASH (Mark R. Watson)
Title: Messengers
Medium: Oil on canvas
Year: 2021

Description
In Messengers, ASH (Mark R. Watson) offers a powerful, tactile encounter between two well-known symbols of the American West: the White Bison and the Bald Eagle. The painting uses thick, expressive impasto to highlight the raw strength and spiritual significance of its subjects. The bison, which is a rare and sacred figure in many Indigenous cultures, stands as a quiet giant against a rough landscape. Meanwhile, the eagle, with its wings spread in a gesture of arrival or warning, connects the earth to the sky.

The title hints at a moment of communication, either divine or natural. Historically, both creatures are seen as "messengers" or omens. Their meeting, beneath the golden canopy of a lone tree, creates a sense of deep stillness and looming revelation.

Watson’s technique, which involves layering paint to shape the forms, gives the scene a physical presence that reflects the enduring, weathered quality of the wilderness itself.
