Fa‑Sah

ASH (Mark R. Watson)
Oil on Canvas

In "Fa-Sah," Mark R. Watson, who goes by the artist name ASH, explores the spiritual connection between humanity and the natural world. The composition features a large, calm sun whose rays fill the sky, quietly observing the scenes unfolding below.

Watson uses a thick, impasto technique, where bold strokes of oil paint create lively energy. This is especially clear in the swirling wave that takes up the right side of the canvas, a design that recalls Hokusai’s Great Wave and connects the sky to the sea.

In this dreamlike landscape, several stories come together:

- The Meditating Figure: On the left, a figure sits in deep meditation on a circular platform. This suggests a sense of inner peace that reflects the sun's calmness.
- The Great Fish: A large tuna jumps out of the turbulent water, symbolizing the river’s raw energy and plenty.
- The Spiritual Voyager: A smaller figure stands within the curve of the wave, appearing to engage with the spray, representing an active relationship with nature’s forces.

The title "Fa-Sah" means "Good evening" in Yuchi, a language that is Chickamauga-aligned. It reflects Watson's broader work, which often explores mythology, consciousness, and cosmic order. With its vivid colors and circular shapes, the piece invites the viewer into a way of seeing where the line between the observer and the elements fades.
