Wildcat Woods

Artist: ASH (Mark R. Watson)
Medium: Oil and Ash on Canvas
Date: 2024

Exposition
In Wildcat Woods, the artist known as ASH explores the relationship between predator and environment. This piece is a tactile meditation on camouflage and the "inner wild," created using a unique impasto technique that layers thick, vibrant greens against a deep, scorched-earth background.

The composition features a dense thicket of swirling, rhythmic brushstrokes. These strokes form both the undergrowth of a forest and the features of a feline. This visual ambiguity challenges the viewer to distinguish the hunter from its habitat, suggesting that the wildcat is not just in the woods but is part of the woods themselves.

A key aspect of ASH’s practice is the integration of his namesake; wood ash is mixed directly into the paint. This choice connects the piece to the cycle of forest life—growth and decay, fire and rebirth. The resulting texture creates a vivid depth, with the cat’s piercing yellow eyes serving as a focal point. They draw the observer into a realm that feels both ancient and spiritual.

Wildcat Woods invites the viewer to reconnect with their own primal senses, reflecting the heightened awareness of a creature perfectly adapted to its surroundings.
