Chad

Mark R. Watson (ASH)

American, active 21st century
Oil on canvas, 2023

In Chad, Mark R. Watson, who paints under the name ASH, offers a modern take on the "Little People." These figures are significant in Native American stories and mythology. In different cultures, from the Cherokee Yunwi Tsunsdi to the Shoshone Nimerigar, these beings are often seen as powerful, elusive spirits who live in the natural world, especially in the rocky areas and hidden spots of the American West.

Watson uses a thick, textured impasto technique to create the figure, whose fiery features and weathered skin appear to come straight from the rugged canyon landscape. Instead of just a creature from folklore, "Chad" is depicted with the emotional depth of a traditional portrait. This bridges the ancient legend with modern artistic expression. The artwork encourages viewers to reflect on the lasting presence of Indigenous spirits in the American landscape and the dignity of these "small but mighty" protectors of the earth.
