Phyllis

Phyllis
Artist: ASH
Medium: Impasto Oil on Canvas
Date: c. 2024

In Phyllis, ASH uses a dramatic 3D impasto technique. Thick, sculptural layers of oil paint turn the canvas into a tactile relief. This depth brings the subject to life; a fierce, yellow-eyed warrior leaping out of the shadows of an ancient forest.

The title comes from Greek mythology, specifically the tragic figure of Phyllis, who was turned by the gods into an almond tree. This piece reimagines the theme of transformation through a high-fantasy lens. It combines the sharp, ethereal features of a Githyanki with the strong presence of an Orc. The character's intense gaze and dynamic posture suggest a sudden burst of movement as she leaps over a glowing campfire.

The composition shows a striking contrast between the organic, earthy tones of the ancient forest and the vivid, supernatural violet of the character’s hair. By using heavy modeling paste and aggressive palette knife techniques, the artist blurs the line between the two-dimensional surface and the viewer's space, making the painting feel physical.

This work explores movement and texture. It invites the viewer to think about the tension between the natural environment and the mythical figures that inhabit it.
