Germ

Oil on canvas

In Germ, ASH demonstrates a masterclass in the "grotesque-whimsical" style. The artwork features a solitary, mohawked creature sitting on a river stone. This subject: a 'crust-punk' rock troll, "Germ" has the weathered, heavy-lidded gaze of an ancient soul. This contrasts with its small, pot-bellied frame. Its skin is painted in a sickly, pale color that stands out against the bright, autumn colors of the surrounding woods.

The artist uses a heavy impasto technique. Thick, sculptural layers of oil paint create a real sense of the environment. The rushing waterfall in the background is shown with rhythmic, gestural strokes of white and cerulean. The forest floor is a mix of ochre and burnt sienna. By placing this punk-inspired, skeletal figure in a calm, classical landscape, ASH examines the connection between the "ugly" and the "sublime." This invites the viewer to find an unusual dignity in the creature's quiet contemplation.
