ASH
(American, b. 1973)
Mutt, 2023
Oil on canvas
18 x 24 in.

"Mutt" is a striking exploration of identity and textured abstraction. Using a heavy impasto technique, ASH creates both literal and figurative depth on the canvas. The subject—a creature with features that blend elements of a sci-fi icon and a mythical goblin—emerges from a dense thicket.

The title offers a powerful comment on the character's mixed nature. Like a mutt, the subject exists between worlds: part high-fantasy lore, part pop-culture legend, and part wild inhabitant of the artist's imagined forest. The thick, sculpted paint in the background resembles the twisted bark of ancient trees, placing the creature in a constant state of watchful stillness. ASH uses these bright, clashing textures to question the viewer’s idea of belonging, presenting a figure that is both alien and closely connected to the natural world.
