Calliope

Calliope

2024

In Greek mythology, Calliope is the oldest of the nine Muses, the goddess of epic poetry and eloquence. Known as the "Beautiful-Voiced," poets like Homer often called on her for inspiration and the "divine breath" needed for their greatest works.

In this modern take, ASH depicts the Muse not as a distant figure on Mount Parnassus, but as a mystical, wide-eyed spirit of the forest. She wears a crown made of woven branches and delicate flowers, sitting in quiet thought. Her long features and haunting stare show the weight of the "compulsive inspiration" the artist refers to—those grand ideas that strike a creator in brief moments of motivation.

The textured, thick brushwork and bright autumn colors create a feeling of "Pop Surrealism," mixing whimsical charm with a hint of sadness. By placing Calliope in a contemporary, somewhat dark forest, ASH examines the lasting power of storytelling and the fragility of the creative process in our own "fragmented" lives.
