Ariel at Desolation

Exhibition Label
Ariel at Desolation
Artist: ASH
Medium: Acrylic on Canvas
Date: c. 2024

In this striking work, ASH re-imagines the ethereal spirit Ariel from Shakespeare’s The Tempest through a bold, modern lens. Far from the delicate, submissive sprite of traditional portrayals, this "Ariel" appears as a punk goblin. He embodies the raw energy of urban rebellion and the "Goblincore" aesthetic.

Standing on a decaying wooden pier in a toxic, stagnant marsh, the figure radiates chaotic autonomy. The careful impasto technique, seen in the thick, sculptural ridges of the background, creates a tactile "Desolation" that feels both ancient and post-apocalyptic. Dressed in a studded leather jacket and heavy combat boots while clutching a bottle of "Lethal" spirits, this version of Ariel has escaped Prospero’s control. He has chosen a life of gritty, self-imposed exile.

The star pendant and mohawk symbolize a sub-cultural identity that values individual truth over societal harmony. ASH’s work urges the viewer to discover beauty in the "ugly" and strength in the marginalized. It transforms a scene of environmental and spiritual decay into a place of fierce, unapologetic existence.
