ASH
Spike Mike
Year: c. 2024
Medium: Impasto oil on canvas

In Spike Mike, the artist ASH presents a striking blend of classical technique and modern creature design. The work stands out due to its heavy impasto style and its tactile, rhythmic brushwork. This quality is especially seen in the swirling nocturnal sky and the rugged peaks of the background mountains.

The central figure, a lean, feral humanoid with a thick, lion-like mane and elongated, clawed limbs, brings to mind the "creature features" of 20th-century horror. Yet, it also holds the dignified presence of a mythological study. The crescent moon and scattered starlight play off the creature’s sinewy form, showcasing ASH's focus on the contrast between the natural world and the supernatural. By placing this monstrous being in a serene, sub-arctic landscape, the artist encourages the viewer to see the creature not as a predator, but as a solitary inhabitant of the wilderness.
