Trash

"Trash"
Mark R. Watson (ASH)
Oil and mixed media on wood
2025

In "Trash," Mark R. Watson, who goes by ASH, offers a vivid and cramped view into a dark fantasy world. The main figure, a snarling, wide-eyed goblin, claws through a decaying wooden barrier, its sharp, blackened claws digging into the rough surface. Behind this creature, a crowd of eerie spirits and glowing-eyed skulls pushes forward, their shapes fading into a messy blend of thick brushstrokes.

Watson’s technique highlights the grim and dirty aspects, using heavy textures to give his monsters a real, unclean feel. The title Trash likely has two meanings: it refers to the discarded, underground nature of the creatures and nods to the artist's focus on "ugly art." By highlighting the grotesque and the ignored, Watson challenges the usual ideas of beauty in favor of raw, moving horror.

The painting excels in storytelling through atmosphere. The dripping, ghostly blue light from the background spirits creates a haunting contrast with the earthy, dirty colors of the goblin’s skin.
