Mr. Prince

ASH (Mark R. Watson)
Oil and mixed media on canvas
The Collaborative Heritage

"Mr. Prince" highlights the importance of artistic care and the preservation of Indigenous creative tradition. The work began as a rough sketch by an elder of the Chickamauga people, known as Mr. Prince. He served as a guardian for a design created by another elder in the community.

By moving this original design to canvas, ASH (Mark R. Watson) connects traditional sketching with modern fine art. This shift acts as a visual "hand-off" that keeps the symbolic significance of the original vision intact, showcasing protective images of the wolf and the dreamcatcher for today’s audience.

Technique and Texture
ASH uses a distinctive heavy impasto style, layering paint so thickly that it breaks free from the flat surface.

- Sculptural Depth: The wolf’s fur is not just painted but shaped with layers of pigment, creating a tactile feel that resembles the ruggedness of the natural world.
- Earth Tones: The mix of raw umbers and creams highlights the organic nature of the subject, grounding the dreamcatcher’s ethereal idea in a tangible, earthy reality.

About the Artist
ASH, the professional name for Mark R. Watson, is recognized for his richly textured works that often delve into themes of ancestry, identity, and the spiritual bond between people and nature. His process typically involves reinterpreting found objects or historical symbols, giving new meaning to older stories.
