Uncle Sid

Artist: ASH
Medium: Oil on Panel
Year: 2012

Exposition
In Uncle Sid, ASH applies thick, expressive impasto to create a towering, shaggy figure in a nighttime setting. The paint forms heavy ridges and sweeping strokes, making the figure appear as if it has grown from the same material as the surrounding trees and sky. The dark mass of the figure anchors the composition, giving it a presence that is both significant and vague.

Deep blues and greens define the night scene, while a sharp crescent moon cuts across the sky, highlighting the raised texture of the panel. The silhouette of the creature stands out from this background, appearing weathered, rooted, and hard to separate from the land itself. ASH’s brushwork adds a sense of movement and emotional depth to the figure, suggesting it shifts between guardian, memory, and apparition.

Instead of showing a real relative or a mythic character, Uncle Sid serves as an early look at ASH’s atmospheric creature concept—a portrayal of presence shaped by landscape, texture, and the uneasy line between the familiar and the unknown.
