Snake Dance

ASH (Mark R. Watson)
Oil on canvas, 2024

In Snake Dance, ASH (Mark R. Watson) examines the link between ritual, power, and the primitive. A large serpent dominates the composition, twisting upward into stylized, swirling flames. Its shape echoes the ancient "Plumed Serpent" designs seen in Mesoamerican and Puebloan art. Below this imposing figure, a circle of silhouetted people participates in a rhythmic, ecstatic ritual.

The artist uses heavy impasto and a vibrant, contrasting palette of deep purples against fiery oranges and yellows. This choice adds a tactile, visceral energy to the scene. The figures do not just watch; they actively take part in a "dramatized prayer," similar to traditional rain-making ceremonies where the snake serves as a link between the earthly and spiritual worlds. By abstracting the human form and highlighting the fluid motion of the fire and serpent, Watson captures a timeless moment of collective transcendence and the constant human desire to connect with the basic forces of nature.
