Cheese

Artist: ASH (Mark R. Watson)

Medium: Mixed Media / Heavy Impasto on Canvas

Exposition
In "Cheese," Mark R. Watson, using the name ASH, shows a striking contrast between the grotesque and the ethereal. The central figure is a twisted, goblin-like archer with leathery skin and a predatory gaze, perched on a jagged branch. He has his bow drawn, the arrow notched and aimed with deadly intent. However, his target is not a rival warrior or a forest beast; it is a delicate swarm of Monarch butterflies.
The title "Cheese" offers a sharp, ironic comment. It suggests the forced artifice of a smile for a camera, which contrasts with the tension of the hunt. The archer’s expression is a frozen, jagged grin, a "cheesy" smile that hides a darker, more primitive drive.

ASH’s signature style is marked by its sculptural physicality. By using heavy impasto techniques, the artist builds the canvas into a three-dimensional landscape full of ridges and valleys. This tactile richness gives the creature a grounded, organic presence, while the golden-hued, dappled background suggests an autumn forest bathed in fading light.

The piece explores the fragile line between nature and predator, highlighting the human (or sub-human) tendency to destroy the things we find beautiful. By aiming at the butterflies—symbols of change and fleeting grace—the archer tries to capture or stop a beauty that is, by its nature, meant to be free.
