Raven and Coyote

ASH (Mark R. Watson)
American, b. 1973
Raven and Coyote, 2024
Impasto oil on canvas

In this textured portrait, ASH shows the dual nature of the Raven and the Coyote. These figures are important in Indigenous North American folklore. Often called "tricksters," both are complex characters. They are seen as mischievous pranksters and shape-shifters, but also as key creators who brought light and fire to the world.

The thick brushwork of the impasto technique highlights the rugged and transformative aspects of these characters. Instead of showing the animals literally, the artist depicts them in human-like forms with pointed, elven features. This suggests a connection between the physical and spirit worlds. The warm, earthy colors of ochre and burnt orange create a feeling of ancient history. Meanwhile, the intense gaze of the figures encourages viewers to look deeper and discover hidden truths.
