Waystone Guardian

ASH (Mark R. Watson)
American, b. 1973
Mixed Media on Board

In Waystone Guardian, ASH uses a high-relief impasto technique. Thick applications of paint give his subject a three-dimensional presence. This sculptural painting style is a signature of his work, linking traditional illustration with modern expressionism.

The dragon, a common figure in ASH's art, acts as a guard here. It sits on a jagged rock, the "waystone," and is painted in bright, almost electric shades of blue, yellow, and red. These bold colors stand out against the muted, vertical strokes of the forest background. This contrast suggests a creature that belongs to both this world and a supernatural realm.

The energetic brushwork conveys a sense of movement and raw power. Instead of emphasizing fine details of the anatomy, ASH uses the weight of the paint to hint at the dragon's strength and the ancient, enduring nature of the stone it protects.
