Savor

ASH (Mark R. Watson)
Savor
Oil on canvas

The Work
Savor shows the long evolution of a visual idea. The final oil painting was completed decades later in Oklahoma. Its origins lie in sketches of three distinct models captured in Iowa City in 1992. This time gap gives the work a sense of “remembered weight.” The figures are depicted with the immediacy of a live study but filtered through the artist’s later experience and skills.

The composition features a heavy, tactile impasto technique. Watson applies thick, rhythmic strokes to shape the figures from the canvas, making their presence as solid as the mountain range behind them. The light plays across the ridges of paint, mimicking the flickering glow of a sunset. This casts the trio in a timeless, grand light.

The Subject
By moving away from specific identities, the work shifts its focus to archetype and atmosphere. The hooded figures, draped in earthy tones and deep violets, act as vessels for a sensory experience. Their open-handed gestures suggest an invitation to fully enjoy the present moment, the surrounding environment, or the tactile nature of the medium itself.

The transition from a 1990s Iowa sketch to a modern Oklahoma painting creates a connection between two eras of the artist’s life. The result is a piece that emphasizes the “savor” of the paint and the lasting spirit of the subjects rather than a specific story or biographical detail.

The Artist
Mark R. Watson (ASH) is an artist based in Oklahoma. His work often explores the blend of traditional oil painting and expressive character studies. His "thick-paint" style highlights the joy of the material, turning every stroke into a celebration of color and form.
