Exposition
In Patience, the artist ASH (Mark R. Watson) examines the calm and unavoidable connection between life and death. The artwork features a skeletal figure, a common symbol of death and the flow of time (memento mori). However, in this piece, it loses its usual gloomy feel. Instead, the figure blends into a rich, impressionistic landscape filled with soft light and blooming flowers.

The heavy, textured application of paint gives it a tangible presence that contrasts with the delicate, fleeting nature of the skeleton. By placing the figure among bright bursts of yellow and pink flowers, Watson indicates a state of waiting that is not stagnant. It is part of a larger, natural cycle. The title, Patience, changes the view of life’s end from a sudden event to be feared into a long, peaceful vigil—a quiet part of the ongoing cycle of blooming and fading in the world.

Watson’s style often balances strong, modern brushwork with traditional themes. This invites the viewer to find beauty in the temporary and peace in the ultimate stillness.
