ASH (Mark R. Watson)
Meagan, 2026
Oil on canvas

In Meagan, Mark R. Watson, who works under the name ASH, examines the link between human identity and primordial change. This striking portrait uses a high-relief impasto technique, where thick applications of oil paint rise above the flat canvas to create a tangible presence.

The subject features complex biological additions, including reptilian scales, fin-like structures, and hard textures that appear to emerge from the skin. Although these elements hint at a creature from myth or the deep sea, the focus remains on the piercing, expressive gaze of the eyes. This contrast invites viewers to reflect on the tension between the "monstrous" exterior and the enduring humanity within.

Watson’s choice of muted ochres and deep blues, highlighted by the bright red of the lips, enhances a sense of ancient biological beauty. Meagan is a testament to the artist's interest in the grotesque-sublime, challenging our ideas of what is beautiful, alien, and deeply human.

Curatorial Note: The heavy textures in this work are meant to interact with directional lighting, casting changing shadows that give the "scales" a lifelike quality as viewers move around the piece.
