ASH (Mark R. Watson)
American (based in Oklahoma), born 1973
2014
Oil on canvas

In Lydia, ASH uses a monochromatic palette to explore the physical presence of the human form through texture and light. This work is a key example of the artist's skill in the impasto technique, where thick, rhythmic applications of oil paint turn the flat canvas into a sculptural relief.

By removing color and focusing on different shades of blue, ASH directs the viewer’s attention to the play of shadow and highlight across the surface. The heavy, tactile ridges of paint define the figure's crouched posture, making the subject seem as if it is emerging from or being consumed by the surrounding environment. This method connects traditional portraiture and abstract expressionism, emphasizing the raw, physical energy of the medium to convey a sense of quiet intensity.

This one's for "¡Chlamydia Chaos!"
