Ke mo wi ne

Ke mo wi ne
Artist: ASH (Mark R. Watson)
Medium: Oil on Canvas

Description
Ke mo wi ne is a strong exploration of the deep spiritual and ancestral connection between Indigenous peoples and the natural world. The painting features thick, impasto brushwork and focuses on two main subjects: the weathered, stoic face of an Indigenous leader in a traditional feathered headdress and the majestic, watchful presence of an elk. In the middle ground, small figures participate in a ritual dance near white tipis, anchoring the symbolic foreground in a vibrant, communal landscape. The turbulent, textured sky and the raw, earthy colors of the land create a sense of timelessness. This is a world where the line between the human spirit and nature is beautifully blurred.

About the Artist
Mark R. Watson, who goes by ASH, is an artist known for his work that often reflects the heritage and spirit of the American West. His unique style involves using a palette knife and applying bold oil paints to form a tactile history on canvas. By highlighting the relationship between light and heavy texture, Watson captures the rugged strength of his subjects. He aims to honor the legacy of Indigenous cultures through a modern expressionist view.

The Title
The title, "Ke mo wi ne," means "It is raining," which often refers specifically to a soft or steady rain in the Algonquian language family, used by the Potawatomi and Shawnee peoples. Here, "rain" can be understood both literally, through the streaked textures in the background, and metaphorically, as a symbol of cleansing, renewal, and the cyclical nature of life on the plains.
